Acting as a vessel for proton therapy, the 8,000-square-foot, four-story building requires the entire frame to be constructed with concrete to prevent accidental exposure. To reinforce this concrete frame, Penn Medicine called on Kinsley’s Rebar team to deliver quality concrete reinforcement.

While we have supplied rebar for similar projects in the past, this one was much larger – requiring 200 tons of rebar for the floors, walls and roof to help protect those in and around the space from radiation exposure. The building’s small footprint meant that much of the rebar needed to be bent. During the submittal phase, our team got ahead of potential issues by identifying congested areas that might present placement challenges. We also developed placement drawings around the pour sequence of the concrete to maintain the rebar splice lengths and develop lengths for structural integrity.
